Prosecutors Against Susan Bala’s Request For Certificate of Innocence
Her Conviction On Illegal Gambling Was Overturned On Appeal
FARGO, N.D. — Federal prosecutors are formally challenging a Fargo woman who wants to be declared innocent of running an illegal gambling business.
Racing Services Inc. founder Susan Bala spent nearly a 1-1/2 years in prison before her conviction was overturned by the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for lack of sufficient evidence.
Prosecutors say there’s “no legal reason” to grant Bala’s request for a certificate of innocence.
Bala’s attorney says even though her conviction was overturned, she continues to be “plagued” by the case.
A judge denied Bala’s first attempt to be declared innocent in 2008.
