The Fargo Forum published big news today for same–sex couples.
Allison Johnson and Kelsey Smith are filled with excitement for their wedding in a few days and the present they just received, the Fargo Forum's decision to publish all legal marriages.
The newspaper says it will publish announcements of gay marriages, engagements and anniversaries taking place in a state where it is legally recognized.
"We're really excited. We didn't know what to expect. Allison was really optimistic and I was trying to be but we just didn't know," Smith said.
It all began when the Fargo couple tried publishing their New York wedding announcement in the Forum's Celebration section.
The Celebration's Editor replied to their e–mail submission, denying the announcement and refunding their money.
"I was 100 percent positive they would make an adjustment to their policy," said Johnson.
A policy that the Forum announced in an editorial..has changed starting today.
Matthew Von Pinnon writes, "Some people would like us to deny that gay marriage is legally recognized in several states and countries. To not recognize that fact is to deny or distort the truth, something we're not willing to do."
Smith recalled, "Everyone just rallied and the Forum listened to the community. It was really an ideal situation for us and a step towards equality. We're just proud and thankful."
Von Pinnon concludes by saying, "We know that for some people this policy change doesn't go far enough. For others, it goes too far. We think it's a reasonable announcement policy for the vast majority of our community."
"We're just striving for equality in every aspect and this is one small aspect but it is a change and a big step forward and we're excited," Johnson explained.
It's a small step that Johnson says will open the door for other couples as well.
"Hopefully soon everyone can get married and have that right to have equality in marriage, that's the main goal."
The couple's wedding announcement will be published in next Sunday's paper.
