4-Year-Old Girl Fights Against Brain Tumor
January 23, 2013
"She's been my bright little shining star since day one, " said Ashlee Hobee about her daughter, Eva Hoaby.
At only four years old, Eva Hoaby has stolen a lot of hearts.
"What's not to like about Eva?" asked Sue Stafki, a family friend.
Those who know her call her compassionate and intelligent, a girl who enjoys puzzles and books, but her ability to face the impossible is bringing two Minnesota communities together as they rally around her.
"It's one of those things that you can't be prepared for, you just can't. You almost had to take it in and you're so stunned you don't know what to say, " Stafki said.
"I get that feeling like I had when I was sitting in the doctor’s office, it's just this terrible pain, " said Ashlee Hoaby.
Little Eva was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor of the brain stem on December 31st last year.
She is currently undergoing a 5 day a week radiation treatment at Sanford Children's H
ospital in Fargo, which keeps her away from her home in New York Mills, MN.
"Survival is uncommon, you know, pass the 12 months, but it's not impossible, " Ashlee Hoaby said.
The Perham and New York Mills communities are not giving up hope either.
Family friend Sue Stafki is the co–organizer of a two day, two community benefit for Eva.
Proceeds from the event will help the family out with their medical expenses.
"If that's one pressure we can take off of them, it's worth it, " said Stafki.
"I am just amazed and humbled. I mean it is sweet. She is as precious to a stranger as she is to me, " Ashlee Hoaby said.
A precious little four year old girl who has gone through so much, yet has won the hearts of many, who hope the little girl can fight her diagnosis as well as she puts a puzzle back together.
"Yes, it's a very dire prognosis, but at least you're still here and I get to hold you and we get to try, " said Hoaby to her daughter.
The Eva Hoaby two–day benefit starts this Friday with a chili feed and silent auction at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham.
On Saturday a dance, live auction and barbeque will be held at the New York Mills City Hall.
Donations can be made out to Eva Hoaby Benefit and dropped off at any Central Minnesota Credit Union.
