MOORHEAD, Minn. -

Moorhead Police arrested a man early Monday morning after he tried to barricade himself inside a garage he broke into.

Just after midnight, police responded to the 1900 block of 4th Street South after a homeowner thought they heard someone in their unattached garage.

Police confirmed their suspicion and when they arrived the suspect, Gordy Burkhart, blocked the overhead door and pushed against the entry door.

When police forced their way in they found Burkhart with a large piece of rebar.

"We want to make our citizens aware of this and have it has a discussion to think about things they can do to harden themselves as targets and to ensure that they try to remain as safe as possible," says Lt.Tory Jacobson of the Moorhead Police Department.

Police say they were appreciative that the homeowner didn't go inside the garage, and instead called for help.
