First Penis Transplant in the United States to Take Place at Johns Hopkins
Johns Hopkins says it is preparing to perform the first penis transplant on a wounded war veteran in the United States.
A surgical team of thirty, including eight surgeons will be involved in the 12 hour operation.
It will include stitching nerves and blood vessels in order to restore urinary and sexual function to the organ.
The surgery was successfully completed in South Africa last year and the man was able to father a child naturally after only a few months of recovery.
The organ will be donated by a young deceased donor and the medical team is hoping the veteran will regain sensation within a year of the surgery.
