Moorhead Ready for Class 6A State Semifinals vs. Lakeville South
MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR)-In just their first year in Class 6A football, the biggest Class in Minnesota High School Football, the Moorhead Spuds are in the State Semifinals.
The road to get to this point was full of adversity, but now, the Spuds are a win away from the Prep Bowl.
“I knew coming into this season we would have some challenges,” said junior running back Taye Reich. “But I knew we would hang with them. I mean, really the biggest difference between 6A and 5A is just the level of competition. It’s just a little bit higher, but everybody still wants to win either way. You know, 1A to 6A, everybody wants to win. That’s the goal. So it doesn’t really matter as long as we have the right mindset.”
After three wins over teams seeded higher than them, the Moorhead Spuds are in the Class 6A State Semifinals…coming off a win over 1-seed Centennial in the quarterfinals, the next battle for the Spuds is a 9 and 2 Lakeville South squad.
The Cougars are coming off an 18-point win over the defending champs: Maple Grove. The spuds believe every game that they have played up to this point has prepared for them for the challenge ahead.
“You know, I do think we’re a battle-tested team,” said head coach Kevin Feeney. “Obviously the Power T is a little bit different mindset than maybe what we’ve seen, but yeah…We feel like we’ve played some of the best programs in the state of Minnesota throughout the season to get us to this point. When you get to this game and the final four teams in the state of Minnesota at 6A football, I think they’re all going to be pretty good. We’ve got to come out and play very, very good football if we want to try and earn another 48 minutes. We have to figure out a way to slow them down, especially on first down, and like I said, try to get them into some situations in some third and medium, third and long, and actually make them throw the football.”
Time will tell if the Cougars will throw. In the win over Maple Grove they threw it ZERO times and had 60 rushing attempts.
All season long, the Spuds offense has taken the challenge of scoring whatever amount points they need to in order to win: including a 64-point output earlier in the postseason. If it takes that effort again, they are ready for it.
“Our offense is unstoppable – it’s insane,” said junior wide receiver David Mack. “We love to put up points, we will keep doing that no matter what the score is. We just have to play fast, physical and play out game then good things will happen.”
Moorhead and Lakeville South kick off at 7:30 P.M. Friday night at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. KVRR Sports Extra will have the highlights Friday night with postgame sound to follow on social media.
The winner of Friday’s game plays Edina in next Friday’s Prep Bowl.
