Fargo parents and students are taking a stand against bullying. They came together at Centennial Elementary to learn how to bring it to an end.
Fargo public schools along with the help of Together4Kids, a community focused education program, held a “Bullying: What is it really?” seminar this evening.
The seminar was free for parents attending and helped explore various bullying scenarios.
The common theme for the evening was showcasing the difference between actual bullying and just out right being mean.
Sarah Klimek presented a definition along with types and examples of bullying.
The elementary school counselor says,”True bullying kind of has to have 4 things present in order for it for the most part…it needs to be mean, on purpose, repeated over and over again and it needs to have some type of imbalancement of power.”
“Imbalanacement of power” means the other person is not necessarily bigger than you but that you’re unable to be assertive and stand up for yourself.
Klimek provided parents with strategies to follow in addressing bullying and helping to prevent it.
She adds, “I think that sometimes we forget to truly listen to our kids and hear those details and empower our kids and teach them those assertive and empathy skills.”
Parents learned the “Anti– Bullying Policy” within Fargo Schools and where they can report bullying online on the district’s website.
