Children from around the world will be eating meals put together right here in Fargo.
Hundreds of volunteers gathered at Atonement Lutheran Church in Fargo to prepare over 200,000 meals for starving children in more than 70 countries.
Mason Gourde is helping add rice, soy, nutrients and vegetables to bags that will be sent around the world.
He came to Atonement Lutheran Church in Fargo to participate in the Feed My Starving Children MobilePack event.
“It feels rewarding when you get all these meals will go out to children who need them,” said Gourde of Fargo.
He’s a junior at Davies High School and volunteers at events like this one when he can.
“It’s a chance to get out and help the community and you know really do God’s work,” said Gourde.
1,000 volunteers from the community and local churches helped pack the lifesaving meals.
“I saw the first shift and people were really excited and jazzed up people having that opportunity to serve together,” said event organizer Ron Stensgard.
Not only did people make lifesaving meals but it was a time for people to connect from different churches.
“You make friends with people at your table that you didn’t know before and yeah it’s a real brotherhood for two hours, you know,” said Jordan Schumacher of Fargo.
One of the reasons people came was to serve God.
“I just feel like I need to do my part, I’ve been blesses so much in my life that I need to give back,” said Erica Blizil of West Fargo.
“The kids in the other countries it’s not like they, they don’t choose where they live,” said Gourde.
The time spent making meals will impact the lives of many children starving around the world and people like Gourde will know they are making a difference.
Organizers say they hope to have the event again next year.
