Cyclists Battle The Winter In Fargo

While some people hate the cold, a number of cyclists embraced the low temperatures right here in Fargo.
The B-B-BRRR Winter Classic brought out many from around the region in a race across the Red River.

Nearly 100 people raced from the bottom of this hill to the top hoping to get an edge on the other competitors.
Nathan Jensen came to the race to cheer on his brother who makes the annual trip.

“It’s a beautiful day, great day to come out and watch some riders push themselves to the limit in the cold weather and I just thought it’d be fun to cheer on my big bro,” said Nathan Jensen of Fergus Falls.

Two years ago his brother got first place, but couldn’t make it last year because the interstate was closed due to the weather.

“Well I’m obviously proud of him but deep down inside I have that itch to beat him too,” said Nathan.

This is one of the warmer days in the history of the Border Battle Bicycle Race.

“It’s a great day to be out, to be able to enjoy a little bit of sunshine today and some mid-winter warm up it’s fantastic,” said organizer Tom Smith.

Bikers made their way through the mud in the middle of winter, and even after falling down many bikers got right back up.

The race varies from bike paths to the Red River itself.
Many racers in the competition have raced most of their lives including Jonathan Kotta.

“I like riding my bike I ride it in the winter, commuting and so forth but I like to do these races too,” said Kotta of Fargo.

Nathan’s brother managed to make his way into second place.
He’s a little disappointed he didn’t get to defend his title but is glad his brother and co–worker came to support him.

“I’ve never come with fan support so to have my brother and a co–worker here meant the world to me just to hear that support from the sidelines gave me energy when I needed it most,” said David Jensen of Fergus Falls.

David says you can expect him next year at the race, and he probably won’t be the only one to come back for more.

This was the 5th year for the race.
