A Moorhead man is battling cancer and the community is coming together to lend a helping hand.
Rick Rasmussen is fighting the battle of his life.
In October he was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, something he never thought would happen.
“Well a little shocked, like most people you know,” said Rasmussen of Moorhead.
He’s lived in Moorhead for many years and the community is making sure he’s taken care of.
“People showed up in the hospital you know people come over, snow blow the driveway you know those things like that,” said Rasmussen.
His daughters helped organize the Sloppy Joes and Silent Auction Benefit.
They hope to raise money for their dad’s treatments.
“Dad’s a very strong person and you know, him and I both we find ways to laugh about things so we do poke fun at it a little bit,” said Rasmussen’s daughter Amber Bender.
Many in the community know Rasmussen as a guy who could help anyone with anything.
“I shingled my roof ten years ago and I was up on the roof trying to finish up, but didn’t quite know what to do at the top. I’m standing there with a college kid that’s helping me going eh, and I look over, Ricks at the top of my ladder. You guys need a little help?” said Ron Williams of Moorhead.
For around 20 years, Williams has lived on the same block as Rasmussen.
He has several stories where Rasmussen has come to the rescue on a project.
“He’s the guy that shows up whenever you need something done he’s, he’s there, he’s ready for you. So now he needs a little help,” said Williams.
Rasmussen had his prostate removed, but still has cancer present in his body.
He’s very grateful for his daughter’s efforts.
“How do you put words to it, you know things like this,” said Rasmussen.
A family fighting together in the face of adversity.
