Athletes from around the region participated in the Area Basketball Tournament for the Special Olympics here in Fargo.

Some special athletes in the state got a chance to show off their skills here at the Special Olympics Area Basketball Tournament in Fargo.

While some participated in teams, others like John Sobocinski focused on individual skill.

Lindsey Kringlie has worked with Sobocinski for three years and she’s excited for this opportunity.

“I think it’s fantastic ’cause it gets him out, it gets him active, it gets him participating in different social events. It helps him interact and learn different skills,” said Kringlie of Fargo.

These games are a chance for people with intellectual disabilities to show off their hard work and meet others.

“Even more than just connecting with each other, it gives them an opportunity to connect with the volunteers, to make friendships. It kind of breaks down the walls of exclusion,” said Cass County Area Director Laura Lake.

The Special Olympics event isn’t only about seeing which team comes out on top, it’s also about building relationships and showing people that they matter.

“They’re a part of our community, and we’re all part of a community, so it’s wonderful. Yes, they matter I enjoy it, they enjoy it,” said Connie Erickson of Fargo.

Erickson has worked with the Fargo Public School system for nearly ten years.

She knows how important it is to be inclusive.

While she doesn’t know any of the competitors she came to support her community.

“It’s just fun to do community support. To help people and support. It’s enjoyable, you know it’s fun, the kids enjoy it, I enjoy it, and it’s fun to watch them,” said Erickson.

It’s just another chance for people like Sobocinski to shine.

The 2015 State Basketball Tournament will be held in Minot in March.
