The Spud has returned! Moorhead High School’s newspaper has made a name change. They have nixed “Dimensions” in favor of the original name from the 1930’s.

When Preston signed up for his journalism class he didn’t know he would actually be writing for the then Dimensions newspaper.

Web Editor Preston Degerman says, “It was like what?! The paper?! And all I knew about it was that it had a name that didn’t make sense and that nobody reads it or likes it.”

He wasn’t the only one with that reaction, so did his classmate Olivia.

Features Editor Olivia Rockstad says, “I never read the school newspaper before I was in it so I was wondering what it was about.”

A few months back, the journalism adviser and students rummaged through old newspaper content finding that it had a story all its own.

Journalism Adviser Andrew Tichy says, “The paper’s been around since as far back as we can tell the early 1930s and it was called The Spud from 1930 to 1995 and the adviser at that time decided to change the name to Dimensions.”

Their newspaper findings from the past 20–years as Dimensions sparked the urge that maybe it was time for another name changes.

Tichy adds, “The Spud just fit a little bit better so we were looking for something that fit our uniqueness and our brand and so it was a pretty easy decision.

Changing the newspaper’s name from Dimensions to The Spud will bring back tradition.

Degerman says, “To just get it back to a state of which we have quality stories, student input and just stories that are relevant to the students.”

The Spud newspaper is distributed the last Monday of every month and just this year expanded to the digital world with a website and social media pages.

The Spud website features additional stories not included in the print version.
