The first ever Fight Hunger 5K Run–Walk hosted by the Hope Lutheran Church raises money for less fortunate kids.
Hundreds of people in Fargo hit the pavement to raise money for kids in need of food.
Runner Nichole Snyder says feeding yourself properly helps your personality, especially kids.
“When kids feel good they feel like themselves, and they get do go out and explore and discover what they are interested in and it makes them feel more confident,” said Snyder.
The money specifically goes to the Cass–Clay Backpack program which provides kids with a backpack filled with food for the weekend.
In the F–M area, it has helped more than 1,350 students this year.
Fight Hunger 5K event coordinator Megan Lawrence said, “We are very blessed in North Dakota to be able to eat. We need to share those blessings with those who maybe aren’t as blessed that don’t have those foods because there is really no reason for any child to go without food.”
People were enjoying the weather outside but others were also having fun inside, including an indoor 5K and bounce houses.
Parents say they can’t imagine their child, or any child going hungry.
Joe Meissner who has two young children said, “It hurts, it hurts. I hurt for them but things like this hopefully we can wipe it out.”
One in nine children in North Dakota live without regular access to nutritious food.
But maybe with events like the Fight Hunger 5k, there could be one less hungry child.
