Construction Season Takes Over In Fargo

Warmer weather means roads are closing for an early start to road construction season in the valley. You will eventually encounter delays and detours on I-29 north of Fargo and Main Avenue in West Fargo.

To Susie Risher, last year’s busy construction schedule — when it seemed like sections of roads were being worked on all over town–seems like yesterday.

“I wish they’d have a way to keep the streets fixed for awhile. It seems like they start breaking down as soon as they make them,” says Risher.

But according to the city, there won’t be nearly as many road closures this year.

“We’re taking a deep breath from all the work we had last year. We had a record number of new residential developments plus we had a number of arterial roads we tore up,” says Jeremy Gorden, Fargo Traffic Engineer.

Work has started again on one of the projects that caused a lot of headaches for drivers last summer. Permanent roadway striping is being done on 25th Street South near I-94 causing lane reductions. There are two more big projects coming to Fargo.

“Downtown on 2nd Street right adjacent to city hall here we’ll be closing 2nd Street in early July or august. And then 32nd Avenue by Scheels Arena. We’re going to add the other three lanes on 32nd Avenue,” Gorden says.

And part of one of Fargo’s most trafficked streets will be closing this summer.

“Some concrete spot repair work near Carl Ben Eielson School,” explains Gorden.

The city has a construction project planned for this busy part of 13th Avenue but it has been pushed back until next year.

The final reconstruction phase of Main Avenue in West Fargo is expected to begin in June. It will be between the Sheyenne River and I-94.

Gorden says the city is trying to use more concrete, which is more durable than asphalt, to cut down on inconveniencing drivers.
