Fargo Sees Numerous Construction Projects
The city of Fargo is continuing to see the construction of numerous new buildings around town.
The number of projects is creating a competitive construction market in the area, which could mean bad news for someone looking to buy a home.
Construction projects continue to grow in Fargo and Karla Rosenau doesn’t mind some of them.
“I like the new stores; it’s nice to have new places to shop,” said Rosenau of West Fargo.
Construction has already begun on Sanford Health’s new hospital and soon construction will start on Fargo’s new city hall.
Recent bids for the new city hall came in higher than expected due to labor costs going up.
Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney says the competitive construction market is driving prices up for the new building along with general housing.
There are also other factors for housing prices going up.
“Inflation for one, and two, the other thing we’re battling against all the time is regulatory stuff; building codes and energy codes. Stuff that they’re making us do, and of course, we got to pass on the price for that,” said F-M Home Builders Association President Elect Tom Spaeth.
Spaeth says the construction market is competitive for workers here in Fargo.
“The other employers are actually trying to take employees from other people so that works to their advantage so it’s definitely a labor market there’s no doubt about that,” said Spaeth.
Mayor Mahoney says it’s an issue that comes with so many people moving into the city.
The bids for the new city hall in Fargo all came in over budget.
