Moorhead Police Officers Disciplined After Chase
The Moorhead Police Department is releasing information about how officers were disciplined after a wild chase on a golf course last summer.
The chief says the chase put the public at risk and that the officers didn’t follow procedure.
Four officers in the Moorhead Police Department have been disciplined for breaking department policy during last summer’s chase on the Village Green Public Golf Course.
Speeds during the chase reached more than 100 miles per hour.
Three of the officers were suspended from two to five days and one was given a written reprimand.
Two of the officers must train other officers on how a similar situation should be handled.
“All of the officers involved in this have expressed to me their regret on this incident. I think they’ve learned. I think there’s a willingness to share that. Learning with their peers and their colleagues,” said Moorhead Police Department Chief David Ebinger.
Chief Ebinger says there was miscommunication among officers and that they were being briefed as the chase started.
The helicopter used was supposed to keep track of the suspect while officers backed off, but they kept the chase going.
“This behavior is unacceptable and I’m not going to characterize it as anything but unacceptable, but we’re going to move forward and learn from it and we won’t have a repeat of it,” said Chief Ebinger.
Officers were chasing Kendall Feist of Bismarck who was wanted on several felony warrants.
Ebinger says the department’s pursuit policy will not change, but he will make sure officers are aware of what to do next time.
