It’s a new beginning for the Grand Army of the Republic Park in Detroit Lakes.
63 years after its official dedication, the community is re-dedicating the park and celebrating the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.
KVRR’s Erin Lisch has more from the ceremony.

Those in attendance had the chance to honor the Grand Army of the Republic and to pay remembrance to the life of President Abraham Lincoln.
One young man says he’s thankful for these people in history.
“Life would have probably gone on and America wouldn’t not be as good as it is today.”
After renovations, this re-dedication is the perfect time to put Detroit Lakes on the map.
“I believe there is only three grand army of the republic parks in the united states; three or four so it’s kind of unique and it’s a little known fact and i think it’s a neat little deal to have here in Detroit Lakes.”
A part of the re-dedication of the park is this time capsule that will be opened in 50 years.
“I’ll probably put in a couple bucks and one of my necklaces…so I can come back when I’m an old man and use again.”
As we think towards the future, some are doing their part for the present.
“Regardless of what your education is, where you came from, what your parents were can really make our country something. And it’s individuals that do that. Not government, not politicians but us the people.”
