Girls And Minorities In STEM
Educators at a local conference are trying to find ways to get girls and minority students interested in STEM subjects.
The 2015 North Dakota STEM Strategies Conference aims to help educators prepare students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
One of the problems some educators face is that they don’t see enough girls, or minority students.
One of the sessions at the conference was about seeing what could be done to get those students more interested in the fields.
“It’s really important because often in STEM classes, you’ll have a great cross section of economics when you look at the male population, but you’ll be missing the students of color, you’ll be missing the women,” said Presenter Gwen Shuster-Haynes.
“We should get both sides of the story, like I mean the males are one side, females are the other side. So it’s two halves of a whole,” said 8th Grader Miro Herrera Grant.
Some other sessions of the day included building roller coasters and using technology in the classroom.
