Governor Dayton Demands Reprimand for Minnesota Lawmaker

Gov. Dayton wants a Republican lawmaker reprimanded for a controversial comment.

Rep. Jim Newberger: “Boy wouldn’t that be convenient to have that rail line going from the prison to north Minneapolis or any other section of our state.”

Rep. Jim Newberger of Becker elicited boos with that comment about a predominantly black neighborhood of north Minneapolis.

The Republican’s comment came during debate on a transportation budget bill.
Newberger later apologized.

Dayton says the remark was horrible and called on leadership to punish Newberger and to publicly disavow his comments.
