The United States Supreme Court takes up the issue of gay marriage.
They will decide whether there’s a constitutional right to these unions.
Same-sex marriage advocates and protesters alike filled the sidewalks outside the court.
While the high court isn’t expected to rule until June, many people said they wanted to witness history in the making.
Court watchers listened for indications from Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy-Widely, who are seen as the deciding votes.
(Voice of Chief Justice John Roberts): “You say join in the institution. The argument on the other side is that they’re seeking to redefine the institution.”
(Voice of Justice Anthony Kennedy): “This definition has been with us for millennia, and it’s very difficult for the court to say, oh well, we know better.”
37 states and the District of Columbia have legalized same sex marriages…several states have banned it…and some states have it under court review.
