Dangerous Chemical Scare At NDSU

The Fargo Fire Department thought they faced a chemical spill this afternoon at NDSU.

After hours of preparation, fire crews entered the chemistry lab in full hazmat gear expecting an acid spill.

This follows a recent spill last month in the NDSU Research Park.

NDSU Police & Safety Director Mike Borr said, “That and this one combined would not a common occurrence for us, so not many we don’t respond to many of these.”

Mohammad works in the building and was concerned about a spill in the lab.

“So it’s very scary and it made me scared so I’m waiting on what’s going on and what’s going to happen next,” said Mohammad Jabed.

Leaving the building, the two person crew was sprayed down thoroughly in a controlled area set up by firefighters.

Fargo Fire Department Battalion Chief Bruce Anderson said, “It looks like there is probably a few gallons two or three gallons or four gallons probably on the floor.”

After testing, it was found that a steam pipe had leaked causing the liquids and the vapor cloud.

The Fargo fire department came out in full force, and they say this situation could’ve been a lot worse.

“It’s a chemistry lab, you’ve got a spill on the floor and we’ve got a vapor cloud so we got to assume the worst. We’ve got to assume the worst with that kind of information coming from a chemistry lab,” said Anderson.

Assuming the worst but thankfully that wasn’t the case.

According to the crews, Ladd Hall will most likely be open Monday for classes.
