West Fargo Family Burglarized In The Middle Of The Night

A West Fargo home is broken into in the middle of the night.
It’s one of a number of burglaries that have taken place in the city during the last month.
Sarah Smith and her husband were asleep when someone broke into their home.
“He felt like he’d heard somebody kind of rummaging through something,” said Smith.
At around midnight, the Smith family awoke to a stranger exiting their home with stolen belongings.
“I mean even today, we’re feeling kind of just uneasy. It’s a weird feeling that somebody was in here,’ said Smith.
Unfortunately they are one of several people in the area to share this experience.
There have been at least 10 burglaries in West Fargo during the last month, but most of them are at construction sites.
“It’s pretty typical this time of year as construction season really gets rolling. The individuals do go out and start targeting those particular sites looking for unlocked trailers and things like that, or construction equipment that’s just laying around the job site,” said West Fargo Police Department Lt. Jerry Boyer.
Police say spring is the time when most of these crimes happen and even though most of them have happened at construction sites, they still want people to be cautious.
“People at home during the day make sure they lock up their houses during the day while they’re gone and double check those locks at night before they go to bed,” said Lt. Boyer.
And there is one solution that will stop some burglars.
“Generally criminals in this area seek crimes of opportunity. So that unlocked door, that thing laying out in your car, your unlocked car in your driveway. You’re providing them an opportunity so just make sure you secure all your valuables,” said Lt. Boyer.
It’s a piece of advice people like Smith will be sure to remember.
“It’s scary but yeah we’re just glad nothing else happened, I mean a couple gift cards are fine. Nothing was damaged. Nothing big taken. The babies are fine,’ said Smith.
Police say burglaries are more common when you start to see more foot traffic around town.
