Clay County Commission Closer to Making New Jail a Reality

The Clay County Commission is one step closer to buying several homes in order to make room for a new county jail.

Commissioners met in a closed-door session to talk about the possible purchase of between 9 and 11 homes, just north of the courthouse and law enforcement center.

The cost of a new jail could reach $30 million.

Commission Chairman Grant Weyland says the price of buying the homes would be included in that amount.

The county has applied for a state grant to cover some of the costs.
