An investigation is ongoing after police say Grand Forks Air Force Base airman Marcell Willis went on an early morning shooting spree.
The 21-year-old entered Walmart on 32nd Avenue South shortly after 1am and shot two employees before taking his own life.
KVRR’s Erin Lisch has more.
Walking home after a shift at Panera, across from Walmart, one worker from the restaurant heard and saw the scene outside of the store.
Brandon Mcdougall, Witness: “I hear a bunch of squad cars one after another after another. I’ve never heard so many a little bit later I’d say about thirty seconds or so, I heard gun shots.”
Police say that shortly after entering the store, Marcell Willis encountered two Walmart employees and shot both with a gun.
He kept walking through the store and shot at a third employee, but missed.
He then turned the gun on himself.
Lt. Derik Zimmel, Grand Forks Police: “Right now to this point we have not been able to find any linkage between any of him and the victims or any significant linkage to the store itself or the location.”
One employee was pronounced dead at the scene another employee was taken to Altru hospital and was listed in satisfactory condition.
Willis was treated at the scene before being taken to Altru where he was pronounced dead.
The victims names have still not been released, and one Walmart employee, says she’s worried about her coworkers.
Sarah Dhunkal, Grand Forks Walmart Employee: “I hope that my associates are safe. Because they’re my friends, they’re a part of my life you know? So you know I hope they will be safe, but I’m not really sure who died last night and who did not.”
Police are left to figure out why this all happened.
Lt. Derik Zimmel, Grand Forks Police: “That I don’t know, that’s something we may never have the answer to.”
Leaving many asking “WHY”?
