Authorities confirm that 70–year–old Gregory Weiland was shot and killed by active air force member Marcell Willis as he worked the night shift at Walmart in Grand Forks early Tuesday morning.
Willis also shot and injured 47–year–old Lisa Braun before shooting at another worker, missing them, then killing himself.
Not only are people distraught about this horrific and tragic act but also how defenseless you can be in a situation.
Living in Grand Forks, Jerry Jonnson said,”when someone walks in or someone walks by can be carrying a gun can be just ready to off someone and you have no warning, nothing. It’s a real problem.”
Police say Marcell Willis shot Lisa Braun after encountering her in Walmart. Her father says she should be out of Altru within the next four days.
Gregory Weiland’s neighbor said just recently Weiland switched to the night shift since his wife also works late at the store. Now Weiland’s family is planning his funeral.
Considered a safe community, some don’t think this is the last of the senseless violence.
“There’s going to be a lot more situations like this happening, whether it’s copy cats or someone else getting the idea that I’m just going to cause a little mayhem,”said Jonnson.
Not only are shoppers worried but the community is still a bit concerned
Ken Labine said, “You have to be concerned, because you know people lose their loved ones, and it makes them think when their out and about in the public.”
Grand Forks Lt. Derik Zimmel said, “We help lift each other off and getting back to a truly safe and happy community.”
But it will take time, time for answers and time for those affected to heal.
Police say they still do not have a motive for the shooting.
The store remains closed, but employees held a vigil in remembrance of Weiland.
