Suspect in Custody After Alleged Robbery, Shooting in Downtown Fargo

An armed robbery of Howard Johnson in downtown Fargo leads to an officer-involved shooting.

The alleged suspect is currently being treated for gunshot wounds at Sanford. Around 2:20 Thursday afternoon, an adult white man walked into the Howard Johnson hotel a few blocks away from here.

Police say he demanded money, fired a gunshot, left and made his way here. Police found him within minutes and engaged in gunfire. Police believe the alleged suspect fired the initial shots.

He was hit and is in the hospital. Police are not identifying the alleged suspect or his condition yet.

“The suspect fired several rounds from a handgun. The officers exchanged fire and it appears as though the suspect was hit by one of our officer’s rounds,” says Chief David Todd of Fargo Police.

“It sounded like three fireworks went off maybe spaced about three seconds apart so I thought it was fireworks and I came out here to get a soda and I see about eight cop cars so I heard it was a shooting from people around here,” says an area resident Brian Homuth.

Fargo Police will investigate the armed robbery at the hotel and the BCI will take over the officer-involved shooting.

Police say the either one or two officers involved will be placed on administrative leave while the investigation goes on.
