Boys & Girls State Programs Low Enrollment

Boys and Girls State is seeing a decline in enrollment.

In the late 1990s, the programs in North Dakota saw more than 850 teens take part.

This year that number is around 220 registered.

Program leaders say there’s a lot of competition with other events and camps for teenagers to spend their free time over the summer.

They are now trying new ways of inviting their attendees.

Dean of Counselors Laurie Horton-Senger says, “We’re trying to use social media. Twitter, Facebook and all that good stuff. We’re also trying an approach reaching out to them directly via email and even personal letters sent to them inviting them to come to Girls State.”

The American Legion Auxiliary Boys and Girls State Program teaches teens about government operations.
