Roads in the Valley “Blow Up”

Summer is well underway but the warmer weather isn’t all good news.

The heat is causing some roads in the valley to blowup.

City officials say the heat makes roads expand and when they expand too much, the material pops from the ground.

There have been several blowups this summer on I–29 and 42nd street in Fargo.

They say road and even sidewalk blowups can happen at 90 degrees and higher.

“Once it gets to around 120, 130 degrees, it’s got nowhere to go but pop up. SO it’s pushing against itself for only so long and then all of a sudden the material wants to keep expanding, it’s got no place to go but up,” said Fargo Transportation Division Engineer Jeremy Gorden.
