Alison, Horace Mann Elementary was built in 1915, and has taught over four generations of students in the Fargo area.
Alumni of all ages were out at tonight’s event.
Members of the community and alumni all gathered to celebrate the landmark the school has become.
The yard party featured food, live music and an outdoor movie.
“So excited because we did little fighting to keep the school here now it’s here. They’ve invested in it and we all invested in it, and looks she’s 100 years old going strong,” said Tracy Walvatne of the Horace Mann Neighborhood Association.
The Horace Mann Neighborhood Association rallied to keep the school standing in the 1990s after the Fargo School District proposed to close some of the north side schools.
The kick off centennial event for Horace Mann Elementary has brought back memories for alumni and attendees.
“The playground is much different than I remember. One of our favorite things was the big tires, and we would come in everyday with bumps and bruises from the tires landing on us,” said 1981 alumni Chris Flobreg.
Warren Opperman is at 1932 alumni of Horace Mann elementary.
He says being back at his old school makes him feel like a kid again.
“The softball field was right here, and we use to play and get a prize not really a prize. But we would try to hit a foul ball so it would go break a window,” said Warren Opperman 1931 Horace Mann Alumni.
The yard party is still going on until 10pm tonight.
If you didn’t get the chance to come out and celebrate, it is the first of many centennial events Horace Mann has planned for the rest of the year.
