Farmers are taking to the fields as the first crops of the season are ready to be harvested.

KVRR’s Brittany Ford has what crop farmers are saying will be the best of the season.

“Yield is good, protein levels are a little low, but it’s been a good year for wheat,” says Farmer David Richard.

Agriculture specialist and farmers in Cass County are saying it will be the year of wheat.

Barley and wheat have been the first two crops of the season to be harvested.

The barley harvest in Cass County is mostly done.

“Cass County anyways yields looked like they were above average and most of the quality was multi-quality. So it looked a very favorable barley crop,” said NDSU Extension Crop Advisor John Kringler.

Wheat producers are also finished or nearly done with the harvest process.

The spring wheat yield is varying from 60 to 80 bush loads, with varying protein levels.

“We had a good growing year on the small grains. You know overall it’s been good,” says NDSU Extension Crop Advisor John Kringler.

This spring wheat season is one of the best farmers have seen in years.

David Richard’s family has been farming since the 1870’s.

They started their wheat production two weeks ago and are finishing the last batch.

To maximize their harvest, they plan on storing some bushels away before distributing.

“Historically at harvest time the price is sometime on the less, but some years their not. You hope that later on you get a better price,” said Farmer David Richard.

Farmers plan on opening fields for sugar beets next week, which is also expected to be favorable this year.
