The MATBUS system is introducing some of their latest and largest buses.

They’re equipped with state of the art technology, including a new system that makes it easier to get on for riders with disabilities.

Jack Johnson rides the bus regularly to get to NDSU and the West Acres Mall.

He’s looking forward to these three buses joining the MATBUS fleet by the middle of next week.

“I hope they do it for the routes that I take, because that’d be great,” said Johnson of Fargo.

Inside the buses, you will find a Q’Straint Quantam device; or a fully automatic wheelchair station.

It’s a chance to make trips easier for riders with disabilities.

“This seating enables additional room for the ADA passenger and eases access for the ADA passenger,” said Michael Laidlaw with Q’Straint.

“Many people who ride the bus regularly say the MATBUS upgrades would be very beneficial, even if some of the additions won’t affect them.”

“I think it’s a good thing. I mean, everybody should have equal opportunity to be able to ride the bus,” said Sheila Miller of Fargo.

“I mean I know they already have ways for them to get on the bus and take it but it’s cool that that’s going to be even more accessible,” said Johnson.

The new buses will have cameras on the inside and outside, digital display monitors that tell you what’s the next stop, an additional bike rack, and smoother rides.

Johnson says he’s used public transportation in other cities and likes that Fargo is getting some upgrades.

“I think the real advantage is just making everything more smooth, because I used to live in Minneapolis and their bus system is amazing,” said Johnson.

They’re upgrades that riders like Johnson appreciate.

Two of the buses will ride in Fargo and the other one in Moorhead.

The total cost is about $1.75 million and they are paid in part through capital grants.
