September is National Recovery Month and some local groups are hosting several events to highlight that recovery is possible.

reGROUP out of Moorhead is one of the main organizers.

Colleen Cunningham knows the struggles of addiction.
At a young age, she was addicted to cocaine and methamphetamines.
She knows the importance of taking part in National Recovery Month.

“Recovery month is very important, because it gives us a chance to educate people about the entire recovery process, about addiction itself,” said Cunningham of Moorhead.

She says there is a stigma on addiction and that needs to change.

“Just because someone’s an addict doesn’t mean that they’re homeless and on the street and that they’re thieves. I came from a middle class family; you know it can be anybody,” said Cunningham.

This coming month, reGROUP is one of several organizations putting together National Recovery Month events.
Comedian Mark Lundholm will be at the Fargo Theatre Thursday.
There will also be a bike for recovery event on Saturday and a recovery walk on September 9th.

“We want those who are still struggling in their addiction to get the help they need,” said Denise Peterson with reGROUP.

There are more events throughout the month aimed at increasing awareness and trying to get some people the help they need.

“It’s showing people that you know, you can make it. You can be a success,” said Cunningham.

It’s also a time for people like Cunningham to celebrate her recovery.
