UND could face a legal fight over “Roughriders” if it’s chosen as a nickname since a junior hockey team in Iowa owns the rights.

Many UND students want “North Dakota” back on the ballot as an option for the schools new nickname.
The UND Student Government passed a resolution in favor of having the name as an option.
Student leaders say many on campus would like to see it as an option.

“When we sent off that student government survey a couple of weeks ago, we had an overwhelming majority of students that responded saying that they wanted to see “North Dakota” as an option, and I think that’s really where this resolution came from was just the idea that we had a duty to our constituents to voice their opinion,” said UND Student Body President Matt Kopp.

The resolution is a recommendation to the school and carries no official weight.
