Kids Fight Fires at Moorhead Fire Department

Sorry, this video is no longer available

Kids had the chance to hose down fires at Moorhead Fire Department’s open house as part of Fire Prevention Week.

Until you’ve seen it with your eyes, it can be difficult for kids to truly grasp the seriousness of fire safety.

But for any family who attended Moorhead Fire Department’s Open House that may no longer be a problem.

“It’s important because I know longer have to struggle to put on a seatbelt. Fire safety is very important, safety in the car is very important and they go over all that here,” says Krystal Joox of Moorhead.

Taking away life skills and at the same time, having a blast.

“My son actually really wanted to come and he was quiet in the car the whole way so he wouldn’t get in trouble so he could come,” says Amanda Fahlstrom of Moorhead.

Because what’s better than to be a real life firefighter?

“He lit up like a Christmas tree when he saw that he might be able to touch a fire extinguisher,” says Fahlstrom.

“Putting out a small fire is pretty easy. All you have to do is think of the acronym PASS, which is pull, aim, squeeze and sweep.”

“If you ever do have a fire in your house, they’re familiar with the alarms going off and we test our smoke detectors every month,” says Joox.

Something Krystal learned at last year’s open house.

“You can see when they walk away with a life skill that carries on for the rest of their life and that’s meaningful for us,” says Moorhead Fire Dept. Assistant Chief, Chad Stangeland.

Not just fighting fires, but preventing them.

This is the last day for fire prevention week.
