Grand Forks Looks to Solve Demers Avenue Jaywalking Problem

Demers just before the Columbia overpass in Grand Forks is raising concerns for city officials.

They are looking at toughening jaywalking ordinances to stop students from illegally crossing the busy intersection.

Since the Bolden apartment building opened in August, people have complained about the number of UND students who cross the road illegally to get to campus.

The city is not only looking to increase enforcement, but also have projects in the works to keep students safe.

“Making it as safe as possible, and prevent the unsafe crossings that are going on so again education, enforcement, and then hopefully the long term is to get this connection directly to the overpass,” said Ryan Brooks Grand Forks City Planner.

Brooks says the city hopes to have a solution by the end of the year.
