Moorhead Thrift Shop Giving Back for 40 years

A thrift store in Moorhead has been giving back to the community for decades.

The interesting thing is this non-profit helps other non-profits.

Meet Donny Skyberg, the manager and president of Moorhead Thrift Shop.

It’s not your typical thrift store.

“Yesterday, a guy moved here and didn’t have a coat so we gave him a winter coat to keep him warm”, says Skyberg.

That’s right. This thrift store isn’t all about profit.

In fact, they make no profit.

“We have to every month get rid of our excess money. So we just gave it to the food pantry and hospice and places like that”, says Skyberg.

For 40 years, the owners have always had a mission to make sure to give their extra cash back into the community.

Since May, they’ve donated over half a million dollars, with over 20 local charities supported.

At the end of each month, money is sent to local food banks.

Dorothy Day House is just one of the local charities that receive donations from Moorhead Thrift Shop.

Even if it may go unnoticed it’s the small change that makes a big difference.

“We serve about 650–700 families every single month. So their contribution is instrumental in helping us purchase food,” says Sonja Ellner, Dorothy Day House Executive Director.

Dorothy Day House receives a $200 donation to their food pantry monthly.

This comes in handy for the busy holiday season.

But food banks aren’t the only places that Moorhead Thrift Shop has contributed to.

Donations have made their way to the purr–fect shelter.

“That’s kind of weird, a non–profit giving a donation to another non–profit. And I just kind of went ‘I think it’s great.’ What do you say to something like that, it’s amazing,” says Gail Adams Ventzke with Cats Cradle animal shelter.

Cats Cradle use the donations from Moorhead Thrift for everything from food to medical expenses.

19 years and 45 hours of volunteer work a week, Skyberg still loves his job.

“It is a real blessing to help other people. It makes you happy,” says Skyberg.

Moorhead Thrift Shop can always use a helping hand at the shop. They are located on Second Avenue South.
