Fargo police, firefighters and swat team members filled Olivet Lutheran Church’s parking lot when a man shoots and kills himself.
Authorities were called to the church around 10 this morning.
Two friends stood outside a man’s vehicle as he sat in the parking lot threatening to kill himself.
13th Avenue and University Drive intersections were closed to traffic.
Police say there was no direct threats made to the public, but took precaution because he had a gun.
“We clear out the area and make it so cars can’t get in or out so people can’t be in the area and then we try and establish a dialogue with the individual. Of course one way communication is what we had because he didn’t respond to us but we try and use the means available to us at the time,” says Fargo Police Sgt. Mark Lykken.
Church members were held inside the building until all was clear.
It is unclear why the man was in that parking lot, as it is believed he has no relation to the church.
