Two Davies High Students Marching in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Two girls from Fargo are heading to New York City to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Every day in class playing the flute is ordinary for Sydney and Alexia.

The pair just got news that will give them an extraordinary day.

“I saw it, and it said, ‘Congratulations,’ were for the first words I saw, I was like ‘Oh my gosh!’ I was freaking out I was so excited,” says Davies High School student Sydney Brusseau.

The girls both attend Davies High School.

Both are in the same band class.

Both were accepted into the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Marching Band.

“My mom was in the room and I was like ‘Mom, I just got into the Macy’s Parade’ and she fell off the couch, she was so excited,” says Davies High student, Alexia Belk.

The students first picked up the instrument years ago.

Alexia was bit by the music bug in 4th grade.

Sydney started two years after.

Fast forward to May 2015.

Their audition video was posted on Youtube.

“It was really stress–free. We just sent it in over the internet,” says Belk.

The good news came this summer.

“It was just crazy that we both made it because we know each other so well. And we’re from the same school and everything. So that’s even more crazy,” says Brusseau.

Davies High School Band Instructor Darcy Brandenburg says, “I’m a very proud band teacher right now. And the thing too, is that I’m also very grateful because these students, the credit goes to them.”

The girls have two weeks until they hit the streets of New York City. The pressure is on, but they’re already practicing the music to get rid of those jitters.

“By parade day we have to have it memorized. So I’ve started to memorize the music a little bit. We can have it while we’re practicing so that helps a little bit to relieve the stress,” says Brusseau.

“It hasn’t really hit me yet. I’m like ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to New York,” but I feel like I’m going to get on the plane and be like ‘Oh my gosh, I’m going to New York!’ It’ll be super exciting,” says Belk.

The girls will head out on their Big Apple adventure November 21st.

Macy’s boasts the parade is seen by over 3 million spectators in person and 50 million more on TV.
