Search For Missing Hunter Continues in Walsh County
The search for a missing hunter in Walsh County continues.
KVRR’s Sarah Brechbill joined the more than 400 people volunteering their time to help find Travis Vorachek.
She joins us live. Sarah?
TJ and Alison, 45 year-old Travis Vorachek of Grand Forks was supposed to meet his father to go hunting Saturday morning, but he never showed up.
Instead, Travis’s father found his rolled over ATV near their meeting spot.
Search crews found his hat during yesterday’s search.
Despite an 8 A.M. start time this morning, crews left empty handed.
It’s a testament to the kind of people who make up North Dakota.
“That’s the mentality of people in this area. You come together when people need help,” says Michigan Whitman Volunteer Firefighter, Bryan Haugen.
More than 400 people made up the search crews looking for Travis Vorachek.
“They’ve come from all over, it’s amazing,” says Walsh County Sheriff, Ron Jurgens.
Residents from Grand Forks, Nelson County, Walsh County, and even Ramsey County showed up. But for many, the big turnout isn’t a surprise.
“I know that people come together and this is what we do here so yeah I was expecting a big crowd,” says Search Crew Volunteer, Terri Hintz of Grand Forks.
Terri and Travis’s sons have played on the same soccer team for the past three years.
She first heard he went missing last night.
“I feel very bad for the family and for all that they’re going through so I couldn’t imagine not giving it a shot today,” says Hintz.
“Workers say the most challenging part about the search was going through the nearly five miles of high brush.”
“It’s tough walking and it’s so vast, there’s so many directions to cover,” says Hintz.
“We’re doing a really good job of those searchers getting out there and searching those areas. It’s really tough searching. I hand it to the searchers because they’re doing a really tough task today,” says Sheriff Jurgens.
“Like everybody has been talking they would do it for anybody because it could be on of their own,” says Haugen.
And one of their own is what Travis has become, as search crews refuse to give up hope.
Search dogs from Fargo, Grand Forks water rescue and customs and border patrol are all playing an active role in the search.
Workers will reevaluate the scene and continue come tomorrow morning, to continue their search.
