“It’s My Mission”: NDSU Freshman Fights for Veterans’ Rights and Recognition

One freshman at NDSU has made it her passion to advocate for veterans and their rights.

Rachel Petersen is fighting to bring awareness for veterans who have been deprived of their proper rights and recognition.

Petersen’s grandfather is a Vietnam veteran.

After she learned that he never received his Bronze Star for meritorious service, due to lost paperwork, she made it a point to reclaim his medal.

Since then, Petersen has found purpose in allowing veterans to get their voice heard.

“Vietnam Vets have extreme levels of PTSD, repression of memories, and it’s really become my mission to give a voice. I want these vets know that their stories are not irreverent just because they are old, I want them to know I will listen, and also they have a voice,” said Rachel Petersen Veteran Advocate.

Petersen also has created a Facebook page to help bring awareness.
