Moorhead Police Officer Joining Street Crimes Unit
The Moorhead Police Department is joining the F-M Metro Street Crimes Unit full time.
Officers with the department say one specific incident this summer showed them how useful the unit can be.
The Moorhead Police Department faced staffing shortages this summer, but the city commission just approved funding for a new officer.
That allows one officer to move to the Street Crimes Unit full time.
The Fargo-Moorhead Metro Street Crimes Unit was formed this summer.
Lieutenant Tory Jacobson with the Moorhead P-D says the unit is already helping.
A Clay County Street Crimes officer was present during a shooting this summer at Romkey Park in Moorhead.
Information from the officer helped solve the crime much faster than normal.
That’s what the new Moorhead officer on the unit will try to do as well.
Jacobson says, “They’re gonna be very engaged in activities in the community that may have gang member participation. Certainly intelligence gathering, and sharing that information with the various departments. “
Police started the street crimes unit after noticing a spike in gang activity in the area.
Moorhead police are working to determine which officer will join the street crimes unit full time.
That officer will officially join the unit January 1st.
