Update on Fargo Flood Protection Progress

The days of fighting flood waters with sand bags will soon be coming to an end.

The city of Fargo has made progress on many of the flood prevention projects along the river.

Fargo has been able to finish up to half of its ongoing flood prevention projects.

They say state funding has been a great help.

When it comes to flooding, the city of Fargo will soon be fully equipped and ready.

The $120 million dollars in additional state funding is one major reason why.

“The state is helping us get to that faster the city itself had projected doing over 5-7years, and with that extra money from the state were going to be  able to do that faster probably 3-5 years so were very excited about that,” says Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney.

The city has a total of $240 million dollars’ worth of flood prevention projects.

This includes sealing levy holes, pump stations, and the construction of flood walls.

This year the city has made significant progress completing many of those.

“We’ve able to complete a handful of projects that we’ve been working on for the past couple of years,” says Nathan Boerboom Fargo Division Engineer.

The two main projects that will soon wrap up include levy repair on 2nd Avenue South by the YMCA, and flood wall construction on 14th Street South near the water treatment plant.

“Majority of that work will be getting done this year, we knew there’s some work that is occurring next year that will still be ongoing for next year, but the same level of protection will be back in place here in the next couple of weeks,” says Boerboom.

The city says flood prevention is ongoing, but they will be working to complete 12 more projects next year.
