Detroit Mountain Opens for Ski Season

Detroit Mountain kicked off its first snow day with “White Friday”.

“White Friday” is when ski areas open the day after Thanksgiving.

“Instead of going shopping, we came skiing,” says Kramer Resident, Jennifer Issendorf.

Hundreds of skiers flocked to Detroit Mountain for the first day of the ski season.

“It’s been exciting to see everybody coming out. We’re supposed to open at 10 am. People were here at 8:30. So the excitement’s in the air,” says Detroit Mountain Rental Manager, Tony Schmitz.

The anticipation for “White Friday” has been on many skiers’ mind.

“It’s just a fun winter activity. I really enjoy being out in the snow,” says Bemidji resident, Sam Wolkoff.

But Mother Nature, failed to deliver good snow this year, leaving only a few runs open.

“Five days of snow making is probably all that we had out. So we did pretty good for that. What can you do?” says Schmitz.

There have only been a few days of snow making but there’s still a crowd showing up for the first day on White Friday.

“I really didn’t want to go out shopping. And I really wanted to be out on the hills. Our hill in Bemidji wasn’t open yet so I decided to come down here,” says Wolkoff.

For many, the drive out to the mountain was worth skipping the Black Friday shopping.

“It has something trained for everybody, from beginner to experts. And the snow making capabilities are absolutely wonderful,” says Issendorf.

Due to the weather conditions lift tickets this weekend are reduced to $15.

Detroit Mountain does plan to open the popular Scheels Terrain Park on December 18th.
