Final Report Offers Undetermined Cause, Little Resolution in Fatal Accident

The Minnesota State Patrol releases their final report on the deadly June crash that killed brothers Zach and Connor Kvalvog and injured two others.

But does the report solve the questions as to why the crash happened?

The report released by the State Patrol does not give a specific cause of the deadly rollover crash that happened on I–94 more than five months ago.

But the report does give what they call details in a chain of events that may have contributed to the crash.

The Minnesota State Patrol Crash Report states that eyewitnesses to the crash, as well as the two surviving teens say Zach Kvalvog was attempting to pass a semi–trailer while traveling eastbound near Fergus Falls on I–94.

As Zach moved into the left lane to pass, the State Patrol says the wheels of his 2010 Dodge Ram pickup hit the rumble strips on the road.

Zach’s friend and teammate sitting next to him says the pickup began to fishtail and he “knew it wasn’t going to be good”.

The vehicle moved right took a hard left then went into the ditch, hit the median, then rolled several times before coming to a stop upside down.

The state patrol looked into the possibility of vehicle malfunction, after the Kvalvog’s vehicle was put on a list and issued a recall for steering wheel problems in 2011.

However, that was ruled out after it was uncovered the Kvalvog’s vehicle had the recall repairs made to the truck in October of 2014.

The Minnesota State Patrol report says road and weather conditions as well as distracted driving did not play a factor in the crash.

It also stated while Zach was traveling at a speed between 80 and 84 miles per hour, it did not contribute to the accident.

While this report puts an end to the investigation for the Minnesota State Patrol, it seems for those who have been touched by the tragedy it is hardly a resolution.
