Young Scientists Show Off Their Findings

More than 270 students showed off their scientific skills at Ben Franklin Middle School.

Every 6th grader at the school participated in this year’s science fair.

Students had three weeks to start and complete an experiment.

Projects ranged from a taste test between homemade and store-bought cookies, to testing what germs are hiding on various surfaces at the school.

Teachers let the students pick their projects, which they say helped keep them engaged.

“We tell the kids, you’re gonna be a scientist this year. You’re gonna get to choose what you want to investigate. You’re gonna get to set up your own experiment and you’re gonna get to do a lot of learning,” says 6th grade teacher Travis Hoeg.

The school isn’t judging the projects or awarding prizes. Teachers say the fair is about learning the scientific method, not winning a ribbon.
