A Second Chance: Bringing Stray Dogs Home

Reservations are often limited when it comes to veterinary care and there’s an abundance of strays.

One Fargo Dog Rescue team made the trek to Standing Rock Reservation, making sure no dog is left in the cold.

Sleeping in a kennel may not seem like a luxury.

But for these dogs, they’re in heaven.

“In the winter it’s likely they would probably just freeze right away,” says Foster Coordinator, Kelsi Langley.

Thanks to Kelsi and other volunteers at Luv 4 Dog Rescue, 24 puppies and 14 adult dogs now have a new, warm home in Moorhead.

“She was just lying under a tree in someone’s front yard. The dogs don’t necessarily belong to the people laying in their yard they just find a comfy place to lay down,” says Langley.

And all of these dogs can be narrowed down to one thing, a lack of vet care.

The closest facility to Standing Rock Reservation is an hour and a half away.

“So if they’re not spayed and nurtured and they’re just strays running around nature happens and then we end up with puppies and it gets an over control of the population,” says Foster Coordinator, Ashley Setter.

“Cova is just one of the dogs found on the reservation yesterday. She was sitting on a couch in front of a trailer.”

“Before we were able to go out there the game and fish were actually going out and rounding up all the dogs and they were euthanizing all of them,” says Setter.

4 Luv of Dog just started traveling to the reservation in May.

But since then, the group has already made four trips.

“This one has mange all over her feet,” says Langley.

“They do care about them they just have so many they can’t take care of them all.”

34 dogs is a handful.

But no matter the number, 4 Luv of Dog wants to make sure love and care is what each and every dog gets.

4 Luv of Dog is always looking for foster families.
