One More Step at the DMV for Minnesota Drivers

Starting January 1st, if your car is registered in Minnesota, you’ll have one more step to renew your tabs.

All drivers will need to provide insurance information and that also goes for when you’re registering or transferring ownership of your car.

Owners will need to provide the name of the insurance company, policy number and expiration date.

It’s a move that could slow down some local DMVs.

“We do so many work things that we’re entering on the computer so we will have to enter that with each transaction. Hopefully the people will be notified with their renewal notice. Some don’t open their envelope until they come in. So hopefully, yeah you know it will be a surprise,” says Director of Motor Vehicle in Moorhead, Sheryl Grandbois.

According to the Motor Vehicle Insurance Task Force, 10 to 11% of Minnesotans drive without insurance.

This new law aims to crack down on those people.
