Hog Farm Controversy Stirring in Buffalo

A proposed hog farm may soon be coming to Buffalo, North Dakota and many community members aren’t happy.

The Pipestone System just got approval from the North Dakota Department of Health.

The company plans to build a $15 million facility just north of the Ayr exit in Buffalo.

The feed will be locally sourced and all propane and electricity will also be purchased from the area.

The owners say it will boost economic development but many people living nearby are saying not so fast.

“When I heard you were coming out here. There isn’t one question from this audience that you haven’t addressed thousands of times and glossed it all over and everybody is going to go around here and say ‘oh fine not in my backyard’,” says Gerald Marcks of Buffalo.

“The South farms are not going to have odor we’ve never said that that’s just unrealistic to say but to the extent that they cause it,” says Sean Simpson with Pipestone System.

The animal waste would be stored in a 10 foot deep pit which can then be used as organic fertilizer.

Many people in the meeting are worried about the detrimental health effects this hog farm could have.

The farm is about two and a half miles away from any homes.

But many are worried that this farm could affect property values in Buffalo.
