NDSU Fraternity Freezin’ for a Reason

“Freezin’ for a Reason.”

That’s the motto this NDSU fraternity is keeping in mind when they’re braving the cold this week for their annual Freeze-A-Thon.

Alpha Tau Omega members will be shaking signs to raise money for a Fargo childcare center.

All the proceeds raised will be going to Nokomis Childcare Center in Fargo.

Alpha Tau Omega members say they’re committed to stand on the corner of 12th and University despite the blistering cold.

“Basically the price for childcare is outrageously expensive here. What our money goes to is the scholarships of those children, for those families to work and provide childcare,” says Philanthropy Chair David Ballard of Alpha Tau Omega.

Thirty-five Alpha Tau Omega fraternity members will be working around the clock, rain or shine.

Giving Hearts will match up to $4,000 by Wednesday.

Kicking off only a few hours ago, Ballard is making every second count.

Ballard tells, “My little scheme is I like to tell people that ‘Change weighs you down, don’t let it weigh you down, donate it. It’s too heavy to carry around anyways.'”

Members will be facing subzero wind chills this week, but they wouldn’t be first in campus philanthropy if they let a little touch of frost scare them.

“Well if they’re brave enough to stand out here for other kids that they don’t even know when it’s this cold out, I’ll give them a little bit of cash I got in my pocket,” says Levi Powell of Fargo.

This is their biggest fundraiser.

They raised more than $12,000 last year.

They’re hoping to break that record with some entertainment.

“It’s a really good time. You wouldn’t think so maybe, but it is a fun time to be out here dancing around. You just got to make the most of it and have a lot of fun,” says Vice President John Yale of Alpha Tau Omega.

It may come in small doses, but every penny counts.

“Some people they have cup holders full of change. We make jokes, don’t care that stuff around; you don’t like it in your cup holder anyways. Donate it,” says Ballard.

For 24 hours, Alpha Tau Omega members will continue to stand at the corner collecting donations until Thursday.
