North Dakota Nursing Homes Fear Budget Shortfall

The long–term care industry is worrying over about a cut to the state budget.

Shortfalls in oil tax collections brought on by the low crude oil prices are to blame for a one billion dollar budget deficit.

The decrease in state funding would also lead to a matching decrease in federal aid available through Medicaid for those without adequate insurance.

“Seniors need a lot of care.  And often times that care is provided by government-related programs, and we’re placing pressure on those programs – we’re reducing what’s available,” said State Senator Tim Mathern, a Democrat from the 11th District.

Governor Dalrymple ordered a four percent cut to nearly all programs statewide.

The North Dakota Department of Human Services has yet to decide on how to implement the governor’s request.
